13-year-old dies when tree falls into lake, smashes pontoon boats, Oregon police say
A 13-year-old girl on an outing to the lake was killed when a large tree fell onto two boats, Oregon police say.
The pontoon boats were tethered together near the shoreline of Detroit Lake when a large tree fell into the lake and struck the boats Sunday, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.
The girl was severely injured by the tree falling and was taken to Mongold State Park, where she received medical assistance, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“Deputies and emergency personnel arrived at the Mongold boat ramp a short time later where CPR was being administered to the victim,” Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The victim, a 13-year-old girl from Utah who was visiting family, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
“Life Flight was called to transport the patient,” the release said.
No one else on the boat was injured, officials said.
