‘Rogue’ critter takes cops on wild Colorado chase. Watch ‘hopping’ culprit speed away
A rogue creature led police on a “hopping speed” chase through a Colorado town, funny video shows.
Durango police shared the wild video on Facebook on Oct. 23.
“Our officers were in hot pursuit… of a kangaroo! Look closely…it’s a little guy,” the department said in the post. “Your DPD Officers Preskorn, Walters, and Hamer were caught in a high-speed (well, hopping speed) chase with an unexpected suspect — a rogue red-kangaroo!”
Video shows officers laughing as they ponder the best way to capture the evasive critter. At one point, an officer’s body-worn camera shows the kangaroo illuminated by police lights and standing in the middle of a street not far from a pedestrian crossing.
“The long-legged friend was released to their owner… and we’re seriously reconsidering cardio,” the department said. “Who knew kangaroo wrangling was part of the job?”
The video shows the kangaroo safely in its owner’s arms as officers pet it.
“We were just trying to keep you from getting run over,” one officer says to the kangaroo.
Viewers shared their shock that one of their neighbors has a kangaroo as a pet.
“Who in Durango owns a kangaroo?” someone asked, adding a simple “lol.”
Another person wondered whether keeping a kangaroo as a pet is legal.
“It is legal both in the state of Colorado and the city of Durango to own a pet red kangaroo,” the department said.
Others joked around at the silly event.
“It was a hop pursuit,” someone said.
“Leaving the bars, but following the rules and not getting behind the wheel,” another person said. “Well done, lil hopper.”
Durango is about a 315-mile drive southwest from Colorado Springs.
