While Annette Smith made a quick stop for her morning coffee on the way to work, she also picked up some Maryland lottery tickets.

The West Virginia woman used various combinations of birthday numbers to buy a few Pick 5 tickets at a Frederick convenience store July 21, the Maryland Lottery said in a July 26 news release.

Smith told lottery officials she waited until after work to check the winning numbers, and she was left in “pure disbelief and elation.”

“Screaming at the top of her lungs, (Smith) rushed home to share the thrilling news with her husband,” lottery officials said.

With her $1 straight bet, which “featured the combination 80578,” she won $50,000, according to lottery officials.

“I never imagined winning such a big prize,” Smith said, per the lottery. “It felt like a birthday gift coming early.”

Smith told lottery officials she plans to save her winnings and “invest the money wisely.”

After her big win, Smith told lottery officials she would continue to play lottery games “without a doubt.”

“I hope I can win again,” the woman said, per the lottery.

Frederick is about a 50-mile drive northwest from Baltimore.
