Dog took ‘empty the shelters’ event literally and disappeared — twice. See the act
A dog at a Michigan shelter is drawing attention online for pulling the wool over volunteers’ eyes during an event, which was all caught on video.
During an “Empty the Shelters” event at the Humane Society of Huron Valley in Ann Arbor, Tiki, a senior pup, managed to get out of his crate and simply walk out of the shelter not once, but twice, the shelter said in July 17 Facebook post.
They even included video evidence of the clever dog caught in the act.
“The MVP of #EmptytheShelters goes to the senior dog Tiki! He took the initiative to heart, Houdinied out of his crate, opened the locked door in the office where he was housed, and casually walked out our front door early in the morning!” the shelter said in the video caption.
This was Tiki’s second escape attempt, the shelter told McClatchy News.
“The first time he broke out of his crate, (he) opened the door of the room the crate was in, toured the shelter a bit, then went out our front doors and right into the arms of one of our veterinarians who was coming in at 6 a.m.,” Wendy Welch, the director of marketing & communications at the shelter said.
“So we extra secured his crate, put a lock on the office door… and still he got out!”
Thankfully, he was found the second time by people at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens the next day, the post says.
“Having a surprise visit from Tiki was the best part of our day! We are so glad to hear he has an adoption pending - What a sweetie!,” the Matthaei Botanical Gardens posted in the comment section.
The shelter confirmed that Tiki has a brand new home.
“Tiki was in a crate in the office instead of a regular kennel because we are over-full… it’s like he’s helping us by finding his own adopter, which—I’m happy to say—he did,” Welch said.
“Tiki was adopted Wednesday night. Since then, we’ve heard stories from previous adopters whose animals have similar smarts.”
