Passing car snags cable, pinning worker against truck in fatal accident, AL cops say
A 23-year-old construction worker was killed on the job Tuesday, Aug. 16, after getting pinned against a work truck in an accident, according to media reports in Alabama.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said Jose Prado was on a crew pulling cable across an Alabama roadway when a car ran over and snagged it, pinning him between the cable and a work truck, WSFA12 News reported.
Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said Prado, of Dothan, Alabama, was struck at about 3 p.m. and later died of his injuries at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, according to a statement sent to McClatchy News. The car, a 2020 Subaru Impreza, was being driven by an 18-year-old on Marler Road, approximately 12 miles east of Montgomery, according to the statement..
Prado had been a lineman for about two months, reported WDHN ABC. His brother, Omar Prado, told the news station that he was on the way to the hospital when Jose passed.
“I wish I could have talked to him, I wish I could’ve said bye,” Omar said. “He loved us all so much.”
About one in five of all worker fatalities in the private sector occur in construction, according to a Occupational Safety and Health Administration study in 2019.
“Heartbroken is an understatement,” said a woman on Facebook who knew Prado. “The world is dimmer.”
