11 hospitalized, 1 missing, 1 dead after boat capsizes in high winds on Colorado lake
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials are looking for a person who remains missing after a boat capsized at Lake Pueblo on the evening of May 29.
Witnesses say 13 people were on the boat when high winds blew it over, causing it to capsize and leaving all of the passengers in 60-degree water. Rangers were able to rescue eight juveniles and three adults. They found the remains of one adult and are still searching for another missing adult, according to a news release from the agency.
It can be difficult to control your breathing in water that’s between 60 and 70 degrees, weather.com says, and it’s very dangerous when the water temperature drops below 60 degrees.
A meteorologist with KKTV said that winds were blowing more than 40 mph and were part of an incoming front.
The survivors were taken to nearby hospitals to be treated for hypothermia and other injuries, the release said. One of the juveniles was flown to a hospital.
The agency’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team said it may be difficult to find the missing adult, as the boat capsized in 80-90 feet of water. Colorado Parks and Wildlife asked that other boaters avoid the area as the search continues.
