A Utah man died after attempting to slow down a motorcyclist driving in his neighborhood, local media reports.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. on Monday, April 18, the Draper Police Department told the Gephardt Daily. Police said that James Mair, 43, stepped into the road to try to slow down the motorcyclist, the outlet reported.

“He had children and obviously it’s normal for a dad to be concerned if they feel like somebody’s driving too fast,” Lt. Pat Evans with the Draper Police Department told Fox 13.

Witnesses told police the 19-year-old motorcyclist, who has not been publicly identified as of April 20, had been speeding before the crash, KSL reported.

Police said they are still investigating the incident and trying to determine the speed of the motorcyclist and other circumstances of the crash, according to the Gephardt Daily.

The Draper Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News.

“The motorcyclist, at this point, we don’t know if [he] just didn’t see Mr. Mair, but he collided with Mr. Mair,” police told KSL.

After Mair was hit, he was transported to a hospital in critical condition, Fox 13 reported. He died of his injuries the next day.

Mair is survived by his wife and five children, according to a GoFundMe page established by Mair’s brother-in-law, Clay Ah Quin.

“He was the guy in the kitchen doing the dishes, he was the guy making the food, he was the guy coming in and telling his dear wife, ‘take a load off, I’m home,’” he told Fox 13.

The motorcyclist was also transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the Gephardt Daily reported.
