A hauntingly beautiful and private property has hit the real estate market in the Caribbean.

A restored, mid 18th-century residence complete with two sugar mill windmills has listed in Christiansted on the island of St. Croix for $949,000.

The home is in the middle of the island and sits on six acres filled with “lush mahogany trees,” the listing says.

“It’s perched in a location in the middle of the island and was built there primarily because of the breezes,” Rhea Abramson with Calabash Real Estate told Realtor.com

The two windmills come with underground tunnel. Surrounding the structures are stone walls and ruins.

“These ruins are unique in St. Croix. I don’t think there are others like it,” Abramson said to Realtor. “You’re kind of awe-struck. There’s a feeling almost of ancient Rome in some ways because the ruins are so vast. There’s an almost aqueduct-looking wall that wraps around probably a quarter of the property.”

The main house, painted a playful bumblebee yellow, is 1,771 square feet and completely remodeled with three bedrooms and plenty of space. A second building on the property adds two more bedrooms and bathrooms, Realtor.com described.

According GoToStCroix.com, the sugar mills dotting the landscape of St. Croix were built between 1750 and 1800 while the island was under Danish rule.

“These picturesque mills and remaining sugar plantation ruins now serve as reminders of the heritage of the island when ‘sugar was king’ and St. Croix was known as ‘The Garden of the West Indies’, with more than 200 sugar plantations,” the blog says.

While most of the sugar mills on the island have crumbled due to weather disasters, these two that are for sale still stand beautifully.
