Semi carrying gunpowder crashes, blocks U.S. 95 near Council

A truck hauling more than 2,300 pounds of smokeless gunpowder overturned Monday morning on U.S. 95 north of Council, according to emergency dispatchers.

Steven Blehm, 57, of Lakewood, Colorado was driving north in a semi tractor pulling a flatbed trailer with a shipping container, Idaho State Police report. As the vehicle went around a corner, the trailer went off the road partly into the barrow pit and tipped, coming to rest at an angle, ISP reports.

Blehm and his passenger, Deborah Blehm, 60, of Lakewood, were wearing seat belts and were not injured, ISP said in a news release.

The truck’s potentially volatile contents did not cause any problems, an ISP dispatcher said.

“Nothing negative has happened with it at all,” the dispatcher said.

U.S. 95 from Council to New Meadows was blocked to commercial traffic for five and a half hours as crews worked to clear the scene, ISP said in a news release. Passenger vehicles were diverted onto an alternate route via Fruitvale Glendale Road, an Adams County dispatcher said.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at about 8:50 a.m. near milepost 145 about 10 miles north of Council, an ISP dispatcher said. No information was immediately available on injuries.

The crash is under investigation by the Idaho State Police.
