Boise Airport keeps working on necessary expansion. This FAA grant will help

The Boise Airport will receive a helping hand from the Federal Aviation Administration as it works to expand to meet the needs of a growing Treasure Valley population.

The airport is slated to receive nearly $9 million in grants through the FAA’s Airport Terminal Program to aid in infrastructure improvements tied to the future development of Concourse A, the airport announced Wednesday.

Passenger traffic at the Boise Airport has increased 81% since 2015, with more than 5 million travelers passing through the facility in 2025, according to the city.

A grant of $6 million will help fund part of the equipment for a new central utility plant aimed at expanding the airport’s electrical capacity for the Concourse A development. A second grant of $2.88 million will be used for new elevators and/or escalators that meet the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and improve passenger safety, the airport said.

The construction of Concourse A — the airport’s third concourse — is expected to add as many as 10 new gates and will also include several terminal improvements. The airport also has plans to replace its aging baggage handling system, with the total cost for the projects estimated at about $700 million, according to previous Idaho Statesman reporting.

A spokesperson for the Boise Airport told the Statesman last December that construction likely will break ground in early 2028, with completion projected for summer 2030.

“As Boise continues to grow, we are intentional about how we invest in the infrastructure and services that keep our city moving and support the quality of life Boiseans enjoy. That means making local dollars go further by pursuing grants, building strong partnerships, and leveraging every available resource to deliver for residents,” Boise Mayor Lauren McLean said in a news release.

“These FAA grants will help fund two Boise Airport infrastructure projects, supporting the airport’s continued growth and ensuring that residents, businesses, and visitors stay connected to opportunity.”

The FAA’s Airport Terminal Program will help airports in 40 states this year, as well as Guam.

“Boise Airport is experiencing record growth, and these investments will help ensure we continue providing a safe, efficient and welcoming experience for everyone who travels through BOI,” said Boise Airport Director Rebecca Hupp, who recently announced she is leaving her post after 14 years. “These projects will modernize critical infrastructure, improve accessibility for passengers and support the airport’s long-term ability to serve the Treasure Valley and the entire region.”
