Coroner identifies second Payette River plane crash victim as Meridian man

The Gem County coroner identified the second person killed in a plane crash along the Payette River this week as a 26-year-old Meridian man.

The Gem coroner’s office said that Dallin Laufenberg died in the crash of a small plane alongside Idaho CBS News Channel 2 chief meteorologist Roland Steadham, 67.

The plane clipped a power line and crashed into an icy part of the river west of Montour and northeast of Emmett shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Gem County Sheriff’s Office.

Responding deputies found that both men were “fatally injured” from the crash, a news release earlier this week said.

Laufenberg served as the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association liaison for the Nampa Airport, according to the Idaho Aviation Association. Steadham was a longtime pilot and member of the Idaho Aviation Association.

The investigation into the crash is now being conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.
