Expect these Idaho highway closures and traffic pattern changes in December
The Idaho Transportation Department announced several closures and traffic pattern changes hitting roads around the Treasure Valley this week as crews work on road construction projects leading up to Christmas.
In Caldwell, the department will be working on Interstate 84 widening, 10th Avenue Interchange replacement and Idaho 55 irrigation infrastructure replacement. The department will also be working on Idaho highways 16 and 44 in Star.
Drivers should plan for delays while these traffic changes are in place, ITD stated in a press release.
Here’s what you need to know to plan for your commute:
Single-lane closures on Interstate 84 in Caldwell
Starting Tuesday (Dec. 9) evening, there will be overnight single-lane closures from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on eastbound and westbound I-84 as crews stripe, set barriers and prepare to shift traffic next week.
On Dec. 14, eastbound traffic will shift onto the newly paved lanes in the center of I-84 between the Centennial Way and Franklin Road interchanges. From 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. that night, the Franklin Road eastbound off-ramp and the 10th Avenue eastbound on- and- off ramps will be closed.
Eastbound drivers heading into Caldwell must exit I-84 at Exit 27 at Centennial Way. Drivers who miss the exit will need to travel to the Karcher Interchange in Nampa to turn around, the department says.
ITD’s I-84 at Centennial Way to Franklin Road project plans to widen I-84, replace the 10th Avenue Interchange, improve walking and biking connections and add other improvements in Caldwell. The project is expected to be complete in 2027.
10th Avenue in Caldwell
As crews work to demolish the eastbound side of the 10th Avenue bridge, intermittent closures of 10th Avenue between the eastbound and westbound ramps will begin Dec. 15.
During the closures, traffic will be detoured to Centennial Way. Access to businesses on the road will remain open, but routes may change. Shuttle buses will be available for pedestrians and bicyclists.
The department says 10th Avenue will reopen prior to Christmas.
Crews demolished the westbound side of the bridge in 2024. This work will take a couple of weeks to complete, according to the department.
Idaho 55 closure in Caldwell
Idaho 55, or Karcher Road in Caldwell, between Montana Avenue and Indiana Avenue will be closed this weekend starting at 10 p.m. Friday. The highway will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.
The department encourages drivers to use I-84, Idaho 19 and U.S. 95 as a detour.
Crews will be replacing irrigation infrastructure just west of Idaho 55 at the Indiana Avenue intersection as part of ITD’s project to widen this portion of the roadway. The widening of Idaho 55 from Farmway Road to Middleton Road is expected to be completed by 2027, ITD states.
Idaho 16-44 interchange in Star
Traffic at the Idaho 16 and Idaho 44 intersection will be shifted overnight starting Wednesday (Dec. 10).
The highway will have nighttime flagging and reduced speeds from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. as crews move traffic into a new configuration, the department states. There will be two lanes of traffic in each direction along Idaho 44 as crews continue construction on the northside of the interchange ramps.
Beginning Thursday, a new traffic pattern will be in place at the intersection.
This interchange is part of ITD’s project to develop Idaho 16 as a limited-access freeway between Interstate 84 and Idaho 44.
