Repairs after water line break mean more lane closures in downtown Boise
Traffic is only going to get worse downtown as the city of Boise tries to repair a broken geothermal line near Myrtle Street.
After the city completed an investigation into a break that occurred Wednesday afternoon, it determined how extensive the repairs would be. As a result, the two northernmost lanes of Myrtle Street will be closed near Capitol Boulevard, and one block of Capitol between Myrtle and W. Broad Street will be closed completely.
Crosswalks on the north and east sides of the Myrtle-Capitol intersection also are closed, the city said.
Repairing the damage will affect traffic in that area of downtown for more than a week, with the work expected to be finished by Friday, Oct. 3.
The damage will require asphalt and sidewalk replacements, the Ada County Highway District said. Repair work was underway at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
“The City of Boise’s geothermal system has heated downtown with clean, renewable energy since 1983,” the city said in a news release Thursday. “The city is proactively replacing the entire original system with new, leak-resistant pipes in the coming years.”
