‘Ongoing rain’: Mudslides on Idaho 21 force highway closure near Stanley
Mudslides have covered a section of Idaho Highway 21 near Stanley, forcing officials to close the road.
The Boise County Sheriff’s Office announced at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday that multiple mudslides and fallen rocks had made Idaho 21 impassable from Lowman to Stanley. The highway was closed in both directions from Grandjean at mile post 93.7 to Banner Summit at milepost 105.5, the Idaho Transportation Department said in a statement at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Transportation officials said they expected the 12-mile stretch to stay closed at least through Thursday.
“Ongoing rain is making conditions unsafe for cleanup, so crews have not begun clearing yet,” the department said.
As of noon on Wednesady, the National Weather Service told the Idaho Statesman that it had recorded 0.51 inches of rain at the Boise Airport in the past 24 hours and between 0.75 and 1.5 inches in areas near Grandjean.
The weather service issued a warning Tuesday that “heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding or debris flows in and near recent wildfire burn scars.”
The Grandjean area experienced significant wildfire damage from the Wapiti Fire that burned nearly 130,000 acres in 2024.
