This busy Idaho 55 turnoff is getting a traffic signal. Here’s when it’s coming
Drivers headed from Boise to the Stanley area this summer should expect a smoother commute after a “new, long-anticipated” stoplight is finalized along Idaho 55, according to a news release from the Idaho Transportation Department.
ITD said it will activate the interim traffic signal replacing the stop sign at the intersection of Idaho 55 and Banks Lowman Road in Banks on Monday, May 5. Crews began construction on the well-used highway in March to provide safer and more predictable turning options.
The signal was identified as the best solution following a preliminary study and public feedback to reduce the long lines of drivers who stretch down Banks Lowman Road — especially on weekends — attempting to turn left onto the highway, according to the Transportation Department.
On some busy weekends, flaggers were used, backing up traffic significantly on Idaho 55.
“The new signal will help mobility and safety at this historically busy summer SH-55 river access intersection,” ITD Chief Deputy and Chief Operations Officer Dan McElhinney said in the release. “This signal will provide a turning solution for those drivers on Banks Lowman Road, which will help reduce long lines and delays.”
The construction included building the signal foundations, placing underground utilities, installing guardrails, erecting signal arms and heads, and paving a portion of Banks Lowman Road, the release said.
ITD said it’s also working on a long-term solution to widen the intersection. Staff began a yearslong planning and design process to review bridge widening, hillside setback earthwork, and turn lanes “to meet the growing regional and river area traffic mobility demands,” the release said.
