A section of Idaho Highway 21 is closed following an avalanche Sunday that caused slides up to 60-feet deep.

The Idaho Transportation Department announced that the stretch of highway between Grandjean and Banner Summit is closed “until further notice.” Specifically, the highway is closed from milepost 93.7 to milepost 105.5.

“We do not close highways without reason, and this slide is a perfect example,” the agency said in a social media post.

ITD said they are “working hard” to reopen the roadway — a common route between Boise and Stanley. In a Tuesday social media post, the agency said they are “making great progress” on clearing the highway and hope to reopen it Wednesday.

ITD did not respond to an inquiry for more information from the Idaho Statesman.

Last week, avalanche concerns caused the same section of the highway to close, and in December a Kuna man died in an avalanche after he was buried in snow while biking near Cascade.
