A water main break on Ten Mile Road is expected to affect Thursday’s evening commute in the west end of Meridian, according to the city.

Crews have been working on the break just north of Cherry Lane since before 6 a.m., a news release said. Originally, crews anticipated finishing their work around noon, but they encountered “unforeseen complications.” The pipe broke around 1:30 a.m.

“Motorists are advised to use caution and allow extra time for their commute, using alternative routes and following traffic detours,” the news release said. “Local residence and business access will be maintained.”

Both northbound lanes were closed Thursday afternoon, with northbound traffic able to use the center turn lane.

Ten Mile has been one of the busiest roads in the Treasure Valley for years. Recent data indicated 35,000 vehicles drove the road per day on the stretch from I-84 to Cherry Lane, according to previous Statesman reporting.

The crews have to repair the water main before they fix the roadway, the release said.

However, the damage is “deeper than normal pipe depths and on a downward-facing pipe that is part of a vertical realignment,” BreAnna Clifford, a Meridian communication specialist, said in an email. Also, a leaking underground irrigation pipe is slowing excavation work, she said.

The water line was shut off to help with the repairs, the release said. The Walgreens on Cherry Lane and one private home do not have water, Clifford said.
