Update: U.S. 20 reopens across south-central Idaho after weather forced 24-hour closure

All lanes in both directions along U.S. Highway 20 from north of Mountain Home to Fairfield reopened late Wednesday afternoon, a little over 24 hours after whiteout conditions forced a road closure, the Idaho Transportation Department said.

The 36-mile road closure, from mile markers 116, at the Anderson Dam Road in Dixie, to 152 started just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A short video posted by the Idaho Transportation Department to X, formerly known as Twitter, at the time of the closure showed a plow stopped during high winds and low visibility from blowing snow.

Idaho Transportation Department spokesperson Sophia Miraglio told the Idaho Statesman by email at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday that the road was open. Miraglio had said by email Tuesday evening that based on conditions and weather reporters, it would be at least midday Wednesday before the highway could reopen.

U.S. 20 is a primary route between the Treasure Valley and the Wood River Valley at the Idaho Highway 75 interchange.
