With the weather being so much more comfortable, how about ditching the car for a bit and doing more walking and/or bicycling to get around?

Let’s be honest, everyone dreads the morning commute. So if you are relatively close to your workplace, give yourself a break from the traffic and bust out the bicycle.

It’s good to switch things up, and of course biking has health benefits, too — strengthens your hearts, burns calories, improves stress levels, just to name a few. Whose stress has ever gone down while navigting traffic? Exactly.

Aside from being good for you and the environment, there is also a big incentive in October — cash and prizes! Yep, for choosing alternative means of getting around — walking, cycling, taking the bus — or smarter options such as carpooling, you have the opportunity to get rewarded.

During the Ridetober Commuter Challenge, each day that you walk, bike, carpool or bus it, visit SharetheRideIdaho.com and track your commute for a chance to win daily rewards. And, naturally, your chances of winning increase with the more trips you log.

Rewards include a $25 daily winner, a $100 monthly winner and prize drawings. Those who log 10 or more trips in October get entered to win an Apple Watch SE, iPad or a $300 gift card to any local bike shop, according to the website.

Go to commuteride.com/ridetober to get started.

And with the days getting shorter and ultimately darker, it is important to ride safe and make sure your bike has efficient lights/reflectors.

“Commuteride and local transportation and public safety partners are coming together to celebrate bike safety” by providing free bike lights from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5 (while supplies last), according to a news release.

If you are riding around in the dark, go to commuteride.com/ridebright to check out the interactive map for a Ride Bright pop-up in your area. Not only can you grab some lights, but also a variety of bike safety information, depending on the location.
