Give breast cancer the bird Saturday at Flock Cancer Street Stroll in Boise’s North End
Time to slip on that baby pink tutu and throw on a fuchsia boa, because you have a date this weekend with Harrison ... Boulevard, that is.
A tutu, really? Yes, this walk for a cause is fancy like that. And it’s not just any old date — more of a group date. You’ll be joining fellow community members in the fight against breast cancer.
On Saturday, May 7 — which is also Kentucky Derby day, so you might as well find a fancy pink hat — historic Harrison Boulevard in Boise’s North End will once again be flooded with pink for the second annual Flock Cancer Street Stroll.
The event was founded in 2021 by breast cancer survivor Leslie Scantling after it was announced that there would no longer be a Boise Race for the Cure due to the Susan G. Komen Idaho Montana affiliate closing its operations on March 28, 2021.
The Race for the Cure was an annual tradition much loved by Leslie and her mother, Barbara, as well as thousands of breast cancer survivors, who enjoyed having an event where friends and loved ones could gather. So to fill the void, this new tradition was created, according to the Flock Cancer website.
The walk takes place between 10 a.m. and noon. There is no official starting point. Wherever you enter Harrison Boulevard is where you begin. Just remember to turn left eventually, so that everyone walks in the same direction.
The course is one lap along Harrison Boulevard, up one side and down the other, so about a 2-mile loop.
And walkers won’t be the only ones decked out in their freshest pink attire. Many of the lovely homes along the street will be sporting pink decor. Leslie said she contributes to the decorations, including but not limited to a balloon archway.
After completing the lap, head on over to the Albertsons Flock Party on Hazel Street for food, music and a place to connect with other breast cancer survivors.
On-site registration is available for $35 in the parking lot of Harrison Dental, close to the corner of Hill Road and Harrison Boulevard. Registration includes a T-shirt, limited sizes available. Donations accepted for ages 17 and younger (no shirt).
This year’s stroll will “raise funds for the YMCA Oncology Recovery Program, as well as Bustin’ Out of Boise, a local nonprofit supporting cancer fighters and their families,” according to a new release.
