Ready to kick off 2022 with a shock to the system to give critically ill children in Idaho an awesome experience?

Let’s do this! The 19th annual Great Polar Bear Challenge is Jan. 1 at Lucky Peak Reservoir and Spring Shores Marina, 74 Arrowrock Road, Boise. Registration starts at 10 a.m., with the plunge going down at 11 a.m. And, of course, Larry Gebert of KTVB will emcee.

What exactly is the plunge?

Well, it’s pretty straightforward. Choose a means of getting into the freezing reservoir water — jumping, water skiing, wakeboarding, cavorting, falling, crying, whatever — and commit.

Yeah, I know, that’s frickin’ cold! On-site hot coffee and warm, fresh doughnuts should help cut the chill.

Keep in mind, your temporary discomfort will make an everlasting impression on a local child. Because those brave enough to tackle the frigid elements will be supporting Make-a-Wish Idaho, which grants wishes to children in Idaho with life-threatening medical conditions.

The event is free, but participants are asked to raise funds for their Make-a-Wish plunge, with a minimum of $50 — and $50 or more scores you a T-shirt. The top fundraiser will receive a Great Polar Bear Challenge-branded robe.

And, as always, spectators are welcome.
