AARP suspends free tax-service program in Idaho in response to COVID-19
Social distancing is key in preventing the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19). As a result, events are being canceled en masse and schools are closed or doing remote learning. Libraries, dine-in restaurants, bars, museums — so many business have their doors shut.
Considering that the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide services operate out of libraries, among other sites, it’s probably no surprise that this program is suspended until further notice.
The AARP Foundation, which works to “provide security, protection and empowerment for older persons in need,” offers free, individualized tax preparation and assistance through its Tax-Aide program.
Low- to moderate-income taxpayers would visit a Tax-Aide site — there are around 40 in Idaho — where trained, IRS-certified volunteers would prepare tax returns for free.
However, to protect those most at risk, including its volunteers and taxpayers, and to do its “part to flatten the curve of transmission” of COVID-19, the foundation is suspending the Tax-Aide services.
Fortunately, the deadline to file your taxes has been extended to June 15 for the state of Idaho and July 15 for federal filings, giving taxpayers additional time.
But if you’ve still been procrastinating because many tax prep services can be spendy, I get it. Perhaps investing in that tax prep software might be a good route.
There is also a chance that the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide services will “open again in some or all sites for the remainder of the tax season,” according to a press release.
