AARP suspends free tax-service program in Idaho in response to coronavirus
Social distancing is key in preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). As a result, events are being canceled en masse and schools are closing or doing remote classes. Mass gatherings of 250 people or more are being postponed. Some libraries are closing locations or limiting their hours, and Boise’s public library board is meeting Monday, March 16.
Considering that the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide services operate out of libraries, among other sites, it’s probably no surprise that this program will be suspended until further notice.
The AARP Foundation, which works to “provide security, protection and empowerment for older persons in need,” offers free, individualized tax preparation and assistance through its Tax-Aide program.
Low- to moderate-income taxpayers would visit a Tax-Aide site — there are around 40 in Idaho — where trained, IRS-certified volunteers would prepare tax returns for free.
However, to protect those most at risk, including its volunteers and taxpayers, and to do its “part to flatten the curve of transmission” of COVID-19, the foundation is suspending the Tax-Aide services.
The deadline to file your taxes is less than a month away (April 15), but there is talk about a possible filing extension.
If you’ve been procrastinating because many tax prep services can be spendy, I get it. Perhaps investing in that tax prep software might be a good route.
There is also a chance that the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide services will “open again in some or all sites for the remainder of the tax season and if the tax season is extended,” according to a press release.
