Boise School District superintendent announces retirement plans

Boise School District Superintendent Lisa Roberts has announced that this school year will be her last. She plans to retire over the summer.

Roberts made her decision public at the Board of Trustees meeting on Monday evening.

“I have been fortunate to work with some of the most kind, intelligent, brave and passionate individuals for more than 30 years,” Robers said. “For that, I will be eternally grateful. But I am excited to retire alongside my husband and discover new adventures.”

Her final day will be June 30, the school district said in an email to parents.

Roberts became the district’s first female superintendent when she was named to the title in January 2024. She has been with the Boise School District for 33 years, with roles that included classroom teacher, elementary school principal, administrator of Student Programs, Borah Area director and deputy superintendent, according to the district.

Outside of her role with Boise schools, Roberts also serves on the St. Luke’s Community Health Board and the University of Idaho’s Education and Health and Human Services Advocacy Board.

“There’s no question that our district has become more transparent, open and accountable thanks to Lisa’s leadership,” Dave Wagers, the Board of Trustees president, said in a statement. “She has built a great team that centers every conversation around how we can best serve our students, fully support our employees and strengthen our ties to our community. We’ve been lucky to have her and wish her the very best in retirement.”

The board said it will hold a special meeting to determine the process for hiring a new superintendent at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21. The meeting will be open to the public and available to watch online.
