Police arrest robbery suspect after passers-by chase him down

A Garden City man is accused of attempted robbery after he got chased down Thursday by a group of people coming to the aid of a woman who screamed for help, according to the Garden City Police Department.

Juan Jose Gutierrez-Hernandez, 25, is suspected of trying to forcefully take a cell phone from a female victim near East 43rd Street and the Boise River Greenbelt. The victim screamed for help, and a group rushed after the man, who fled on foot, police said.

Other citizens called police, who arrived on scene around 9:30 p.m. and “located a large group of subjects who appeared to be chasing a lone Hispanic male,” police said in a news release Friday.

The reported victim was not injured, and Gutierrez-Hernandez was booked into the Ada County Jail on the felony charge.

“This was a great example of good citizens coming to the aid of a person in need and stopping a crime in progress,” Lt. Tom Patterson said in the news release.

Gutierrez-Hernandez was arraigned Friday afternoon. Bond was set at $150,000, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 22.
