Boise police warn of phone scam; suspect impersonating U.S. Marshal
Boise Police Department is warning Treasure Valley residents of a phone scam involving a suspect impersonating a U.S. Marshal, according to a BPD press release.
Victims told police they received a call from someone using a real name of a U.S. Marshal, who threatened to arrest them if they didn’t buy a prepaid cash card (specifically a Green dot card). The suspect then demanded the victim give them the serial number and security number, according to the release.
Police urge residents to hang up immediately if they get a phone call like this and call law enforcement to report the incident. Real law enforcement agents would not call and demand money like this. BPD also noted that you should not give credit, cash card or debit card numbers out over the phone. If you’re worried about a warrant for your arrest or an unpaid traffic fine in Ada County check their website or call the county records department at 208-577-3000.
