The Boise School District on Monday placed second-grade teacher Sarah J. Cowman on paid leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Cowman, a teacher at Hawthorne Elementary School on West Targee Street, was arrested Wednseday and charged with a felony count of delivery of heroin. She posted $5,000 bond on Friday and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 10.

A long-term substitute teacher has taken over Cowman’s class at Hawthorne and will remain there indefinitely, Boise School District spokesman Dan Hollar said.

The Boise Area Narcotics and Drug Interdiction Team had been investigating Cowman since late December. She was taken into custody Wednesday at a convenience store near the intersection of North Mitchell Street and West Fairview Avenue.
