Caldwell crash killed father, injured 3 children. Other driver faces felony charge
The driver who police say ran a stop sign that caused a deadly accident in Caldwell on Monday night faces a felony vehicular manslaughter charge.
Court documents reveal that the suspect had been drinking, and he told police that he was live-streaming on TikTok at the time of the crash.
Idaho State Police arrested Nixon Amilcar Ixcoy Lix, 28, of Guatemala, and he was booked into the Canyon County jail at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday. The crash, which took place at about 9:20 p.m. Monday, killed Miguel Vasquez, 35, of Caldwell, and injured his three children.
Ixcoy Lix was driving a pickup truck west on East Linden Street when he failed to stop at the South Kimball Avenue intersection and collided with a sedan driven by Vasquez, Idaho State Police said in a news release. Vasquez died at the scene, according to the Canyon County Coroner’s Office.
Police said three juveniles were injured in the crash; a GoFundMe set up by a family friend said the three were Vasquez’s sons, and that fundraiser is gathering money for Jacqueline “Jacky” Vasquez, who lost her husband, and the children. It has a goal of $80,000 and was already over $65,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
Ixcoy Lix told police that he had one beer prior to driving, according to the criminal complaint filed in court. Police said Ixcoy Lix took three breath tests with results that came back as 0.093, 0.06 and insufficient. The legal limit in Idaho is 0.08.
Idaho Police Trooper Ryan Feldmeier said he observed two cans of Modelo beer in the backseat of Ixcoy Lix’s truck — one of which was opened — and said there was “a strong odor of alcohol coming from the inside,” the criminal complaint stated. Feldmeier also reported that Ixcoy Lix had “glassy/bloodshot eyes.”
Ixcoy Lix also told law enforcement that he was live-streaming on TikTok at the time of the crash, but he could not locate the video on his phone.
A witness reported that Ixcoy Lix appeared to be speeding, and though the speed limit there is 30 mph, police wrote that the damage was “indicative of a high-speed crash.”
Ixcoy Lix said he was driving from a home in Caldwell to his residence in Wilder, according to the complaint. Police said that in his statements, the man “appeared to be describing a different crash.”
