License-plate surveillance cameras aid in Caldwell Police pursuit arrest
The Caldwell Police Department tracked down and arrested — with the help of a license plate surveillance system.— a man accused of eluding police on Interstate 84, the department said.
At about 1:20 p.m. on Friday, an Idaho State Police trooper attempted to stop a Mazda on Interstate 84 driving 20 mph over the speed limit, according to a press release from CPD.
The driver did not stop as the trooper attempted to pull the car over. The driver fled, and at one point drove the wrong way on eastbound I-84 to travel westbound.
Idaho State Police identified the male driver and requested assistance from Caldwell Police due to the driver’s ties to the area. After police were unsuccessful at locating the driver, the department entered the vehicle’s license-plate number into the FLOCK license-plate reader system.
Flock Safety is a company that operates a security system used to track vehicles by recording plates and vehicle characteristics.
Just over an hour after the incident, the system located the vehicle near Franklin Road and Specht Avenue. Caldwell police were then able to locate the vehicle near East Chicago Street and North 16th Avenue and identified the same male driver.
Officers contained the vehicle to prevent the driver from fleeing, and the man complied with officer commands. He was taken into custody without incident.
According to the release, officers found marijuana in plain view inside the vehicle and located methamphetamine during a subsequent search.
The man has been charged with resisting and obstructing an officer, driving without privilege, eluding police and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. He is being held at the Canyon County Jail.
