The Caldwell Police Department arrested a driver this week after an incident in which he allegedly caused an accident and then assaulted another motorist.

A police press release said an officer witnessed a road-rage situation that led to a collision between two vehicles near Linden Road and Smeed Parkway on Wednesday afternoon.

The officer saw the male driver of a Volkswagen Jetta pass the other driver, who was in a Jeep, in a clearly marked no-passing zone, according to the release. While passing, the Jetta struck the front of the Jeep, causing the Volkswagen to roll over, the release said.

Police said that after the crash, the Jetta driver exited his vehicle and went after the other motorist, physically assaulting them.

The release did not provide further detail about the alleged assault.

Police arrested the Jetta driver on suspicion of reckless driving and assault. He was booked into the Canyon County jail, the release said.

“Road rage is dangerous and can escalate quickly,” the release stated. “Keep a safe following distance so you’re not forced into sudden reactions. Use your horn sparingly, quick taps for safety, not frustration.”
