Meridian man arrested after allegedly attacking several police officers
A Meridian man was arrested on suspicion of nine felony accounts of assault and battery against law enforcement after allegedly punching one police officer in the face and attacking several others.
In a news release, the Meridian Police Department said one officer sustained “minor injuries” after police responded to a noise complaint regarding a parked vehicle “blaring loud music” at around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at Carlese Avenue, not far from the intersection of Chinden Boulevard and Black Cat Road.
Police said a 30-year-old Meridian man exited the vehicle and walked away from the location, while the driver stayed and cooperated with officers. Police said they found open containers of alcohol and noticed the smell of marijuana in the vehicle, the release said.
A few moments later, the man who left walked back to the vehicle “for reasons unknown,” refused to cooperate with officers and tried to walk away again. The release stated that police had “valid cause to detain him” in relation to their investigation, so an officer attempted to arrest the man.
At that time, the suspect attacked the officer, punching him in the face, and then attempting to punch and kick him repeatedly, the release said. An additional officer responded within a minute, according to Meridian Police Lt. Brandon Frasier, and others came over time.
According to police, the man continued to “assault and batter multiple officers by attempting to bite, strike, and/or spit on them.”
The man was booked at the Ada County Jail and has listed as charges six counts of felony battery on law enforcement, three counts of felony assault on law enforcement and one count of misdemeanor resisting or obstructing officers. According to online jail records, his bail was set at $250,000.
He was not injured, police said. The arresting officer’s injuries did not require medical attention, Frasier told the Idaho Statesman by email.
“Being punched in the face (is) not fun nonetheless,” Frasier said.
