A 40-year-old Boise man has been identified as the victim in a killing that police said the suspect referred to as assisted suicide.

The man, identified Friday as Abel Garcia Jr., died at about 3 a.m. Thursday in a hotel on Sunrise Rim Road, according to the Ada County Coroner’s Office.

The coroner did not provide information on the manner or cause of death, stating that information is pending. The Boise Police Department also would not tell the Idaho Statesman on Thursday how the victim died.

On the Ada County Jail website, suspect Brian Jones’ charge is listed as “murder ... perpetrated by poison, torture, vengeance, extortion, or sadistic inclinations.”

Boise police responded to the hotel at about 12:45 a.m. after Jones, 36, told Ada County dispatchers that he killed his friend, according to a police news release. Officers found Garcia’s body and Ada County Paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene, the release said.

Police said that Jones told officers “his friend wanted to go,” and he referred to it as assisted suicide, according to the release.

Assisted suicide is not legal in the state, according to Idaho code 39-4514. Jones was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and is being held at the Ada County Jail, the release said.

The Boise Police Department said it is still investigating the incident.
