An Oregon man was arrested in the stabbing of his wife Sunday morning in a Meridian neighborhood .

Officers responded to a domestic violence incident call in the 1000 block of West Flower Garden Street and found a woman who had been “stabbed multiple times,” the Meridian Police Department release said.

Police said she needed “immediate medical care” and was taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. The release said she was “in serious but stable condition.” Brandon Frasier, a Meridian Police lieutenant, confirmed to the Idaho Statesman by email that the victim was a Meridian resident.

Witnesses identified the person who stabbed the woman and fled the scene as the victim’s estranged husband, Juan Diego Ramos Lopez, 46, of Ontario, Oregon, according to police.

Oregon State Police located Lopez later Sunday morning near La Grande. He was taken into custody and charged with felony aggravated battery. Law enforcement officials said they plan to extradite Lopez to Ada County.

“As the investigation continues, additional charges are expected,” police said. “Meridian Police would like to thank Valley agencies who assisted with the search for Lopez, as well as the Ontario Police Department and the Oregon State Police for their assistance.”
