Officers with the Meridian Police Department arrested a 32-year-old driver after he allegedly struck someone standing at the back of their vehicle Thursday afternoon.

A Meridian man was booked into the Ada County Jail for the hit-and-run after officers used statements from witnesses, video surveillance footage and physical evidence to identify his green Hyundai Palisade as the vehicle involved in the crash, according to a news release from the Meridian Police Department.

He faces a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in an injury, which is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. He is expected to appear in court Friday afternoon for his initial hearing, court records showed.

BEHIND THE STORY

Why we aren't naming all suspects

The Idaho Statesman doesn’t always name the suspect in crime stories. Our general practice, implemented in February 2022, is that we only name suspects when we are committed to following a case through the criminal justice system. That ensures that if charges are reduced or dismissed, or the person is acquitted, our reporting will reflect that. We made this decision as part of our Clean Slate project, which creates a pathway for people whose minor crimes were reported by us in the past to have those stories de-indexed so they don’t show up in Google searches. We also can always decide to name the suspect later if appropriate. Learn more about our Clean Slate project here.

Also of note, we generally don’t publish booking mugshots of arrestees. Those have been shown to have lasting effects on the people photographed and marginalized communities. Exceptions must be approved by a senior editor.

The man’s vehicle was found Thursday in the 4200 block of South Glenmere Way with “visible crash damage,” the news release said. Officers also found vehicle debris scattered near the scene of the crash, including parts that belonged to a Hyundai SUV.

The victim, who was standing at the back of their vehicle at the intersection of East Deerhill Drive and South Marsala Avenue, was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to the release. Their vehicle sustained “significant rear-end damage,” police said.

“The Meridian Police Department remains committed to keeping our roadways safe. We take reckless driving, as well as leaving the scene of a crash, very seriously,” the agency said. “Our officers will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who endanger the safety of others on our streets.”
