An attempted traffic stop escalated when the driver fled Thursday evening, and it led to a police shooting in Caldwell.

At about 7:17 p.m., a Caldwell officer attempted to pull over a vehicle near Linden Street and Indiana Avenue, but the driver wouldn’t come to a stop and a chase ensued, according to a news release from the Caldwell Police Department.

Police said the man was firing a gun toward pursuing officers in Caldwell before he crashed into a shed at Birchwood Drive and Pleasant Ridge Road.

A Caldwell officer then returned fire and shot the man, police told the Idaho Statesman, and he was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No police officers were injured, CPD said in the release. The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave, per standard practice, police told the Statesman.

Idaho State Police will lead the Critical Incident Task Force investigation into the shooting, and charges against the man are pending, a police spokesperson told the Statesman.
