One person killed in road rage shooting north of Caldwell. Shooter detained
Law enforcement is investigating a fatal shooting that was sparked by road rage in Payette County on Monday morning, according to the Payette County Sheriff’s Office.
The altercation involved two male drivers in separate vehicles, the agency said in a news release. One driver died in the shooting, Payette County Sheriff Andrew Creech told the Idaho Statesman by email.
The Sheriff’s Office said the crime occurred at about 9:10 a.m. after the vehicles came to a stop on Sand Hollow Road, also known as Old Highway 30, south of Black Canyon Road.
“The details of what happened next are still being investigated; however, it concluded with one driver shooting the other driver with a handgun,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Law enforcement detained the shooter, who is cooperating with law enforcement, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office said the victim’s family has not been notified, and the names of those involved will be released at a later time.
“We do not know of any further risk to the community,” the agency said in the release.
The department asked the public to avoid the 2 miles along Sand Hollow Road between Southeast 8th Road and Black Canyon Road in Caldwell. Officials are diverting traffic to Interstate 84.
“The details of this incident are currently limited,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “More information will be made available as the investigation continues.”
The Payette County Sheriff’s Office said it was investigating the incident with the assistance of the Payette Police Department, Fruitland Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Idaho State Police.
