Knife-wielding man shot, wounded by Nampa officer. Caldwell police investigating
An officer with the Nampa Police Department shot and wounded a man armed with a knife late Friday, according to the agency.
Just before 11:30 p.m. the city’s dispatch received a call regarding “suspicious activity” near Sixth Street North and 5th Avenue North near downtown Nampa, according to a news release.
When police responded, they found a man holding a knife who didn’t comply with commands from the officers, the release said. One of the officers shot and injured him, though it’s unclear how many shots were fired.
The man, who hasn’t been identified, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injures, police said. He was still hospitalized Monday but is expected to recover, according to the Caldwell Police Department, which is leading the outside investigation.
None of the officers were injured. The involved officer was placed on administrative leave, Caldwell police spokesperson Char Jackson told the Idaho Statesman. Jackson said the department will not identify the officer. She declined to say how long the officer would be on leave, as it’s a “personnel matter.”
This is the first police shooting involving the Nampa Police Department this year, according to a database maintained by the Idaho Statesman.
The investigation is in its preliminary phase and details are still being gathered, police said. It’s up to the Nampa Police Department to decide whether they’ll pursue criminal charges against the man, Jackson said.
