Recorded earlier: Kohberger case livestream answers your questions on coverage
On Nov. 13, 2022, the eyes of the world turned to Moscow, Idaho, as four young adults were reported dead under mysterious circumstances. We later learned about the stabbing of the four University of Idaho students in their off-campus home — one of the most horrific crimes in the state’s history.
As the events played out — no suspect for weeks, no known motive, investigation by a small-town police force and the eventual arrest of Bryan Kohberger, a Washington State University doctoral student — the Idaho Statesman newsroom dug in and covered the crimes from all angles.
Here’s your chance to hear from the reporters who sat in on the initial press conferences and debunked some of the wild rumors, who traveled to Kohberger’s Pennsylvania hometown, and who attended hearings, read court filings and interviewed experts.
The July 29 Q&A session was recorded just a few days after Kohberger’s sentencing hearing, and reveals how our coverage came together, what we learned, how we learned it and what comes next.
Our panel
Regardless of their assigned beats, these reporters found themselves tracking the case:
Investigative reporter Kevin Fixler took point on our coverage. He did a deep dive into DNA law and the technique that led to Kohberger’s arrest, and traveled to Kohberger’s hometown in Pennsylvania to interview his past friends and explore connections. He also made several trips to Moscow and profiled key players in the legal case.
Reporter Angela Palermo was the first Statesman reporter dispatched to Moscow, where she had been a student at U of I not long before. She stayed for weeks, chasing leads on the case.
Breaking news reporter Sally Krutzig covered many aspects of the case as it unfolded. She was on duty the Sunday that the deaths were announced, provided an illustrated breakdown of the home where the crimes occurred and used her TikTok skills to share our reporting with that audience.
Criminal justice reporter Alex Brizee used her expertise on court records and proceedings to cover much of the buildup to the trial, which was vacated when Kohberger pleaded guilty.
Editor Chadd Cripe lead the discussion and presented reader questions to our panel.
