‘Shoot in a safe direction’: Stray bullet grazes toddler in car on I-84 in Idaho
A toddler received treatment at a Boise hospital after a stray bullet went through a vehicle on Interstate 84.
The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office and Elmore County paramedics responded to a call at 1:47 p.m. Saturday about an object piercing a windshield and injuring a child, the Sheriff’s Office said Monday in a news release.
Officials said the car was hit near milepost 114, close to Hammett in Elmore County.
Law enforcement completed an investigation and determined that an individual was target shooting in the area when a “wayward bullet” went through the windshield, grazed the toddler in the back seat and exited the vehicle through the rear window, the release said.
An Elmore County ambulance took the child to St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
“The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office would like to take this time to remind recreational shooters and gun enthusiasts to always shoot in a safe direction and know your backdrop,” Sheriff Mike Hollinshead said in a statement. “Today’s incident could have ended much worse due to negligence.”
Law enforcement said the county has charged someone in this incident, but did not provide details on the nature of those charges or who the person was.
Hollinshead declined to answer the Idaho Statesman’s questions during a phone call, citing an ongoing investigation and need to wait for approval from the Elmore County Prosecutor’s Office.
“The identities of all parties and further information will not be released at this time,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
