Boise School District employee fired after arrested on felony charges
The Boise School District said it fired an employee after he was arrested Wednesday night on charges of violent crimes.
Christopher Chavez, 24, of Boise, was booked in the Ada County Jail at 10:31 p.m. on two felony charges for one count of attempted strangulation and one count of domestic violence battery involving the infliction of traumatic injury, according to jail records.
Chavez was employed as a special education assistant at Hillside Junior High School and served as Hillside’s coach for the C Team girls basketball and freshman baseball teams, according to the district. He also completed his student teaching in physical education at Boise High School in the spring of 2024.
The district emailed parents and staff Thursday, informing them that administrators “took immediate action to terminate Mr. Chavez’s employment.”
The district said Boise police told officials that the “alleged incident did not occur on school grounds and does not involve a minor or any Boise School District students.”
“This is a matter we are handling with care and urgency,” the district said in its email. “The health, safety, and success of our students are our primary focus. While this incident did not occur on school property or involve our students, we have a responsibility to report and act on information that disrupts our schools and undermines the professionalism and quality of the vast majority of our employees.”
The school said counselors and staff were available to help any students who needed support.
