Idaho man drove recklessly, killed Boise motorcyclist in 2023. He was just sentenced
A 79-year-old Middleton man was sentenced this week to up to 8 years in prison for vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, according to a news release.
He could be eligible for parole after serving 18 months.
In July 2023, Donald Davis was driving behind another vehicle at a stop sign at the intersection of Midland Boulevard and U.S. 20-26, the news release from the Canyon County prosecutor said. He honked at the vehicle in front of him to go, and then drove onto the right shoulder to get around that vehicle.
Davis then pulled into oncoming traffic, where he collided with a motorcyclist, 46-year-old Boise man Shane Ferguson, who was killed.
Davis pleaded guilty in November, according to online court records. He was sentenced to 1.5 years fixed and 6.5 years indeterminate. He also must pay $5,000 to the victim’s family and his license will be suspended for five years after he leaves prison, the judge ruled.
“During the sentencing hearing, Judge (Randall) Grove spoke about Davis’ lack of remorse, noting that Davis seemed more concerned about the damage to his car than Ferguson,” the news release said. “During the sentencing hearing, Judge Grove also admonished Davis for his behavior, telling him, ‘You are focusing on all but the most important thing. You caused another man’s death.’”
