Two men arrested after Garden City police said they fired a gun into the Boise River
Two men were arrested after police alleged they fired a gun into the Boise River, according to the Garden City Police Department.
Just before 6 a.m. Thursday, the Garden City Police Department and the Boise Police Department responded to Veterans Memorial Parkway where a Garden City officer found a vehicle at the end of East 44th Street by the Boise River. The officer attempted to stop the two men in the vehicle, the police department said in a news release.
Police said when they approached the vehicle, the driver rammed the marked police car and fled south on East 44th Street, accelerating well over 50 miles an hour. The driver didn’t stop for another Garden City police vehicle and swerved around that officer’s car, losing control of their vehicle and crashing into a fence on the corner of East 44th and Adams streets, according to the release.
The initial responding officer used his patrol car to try and prevent the men from fleeing again, but they backed up and again struck an officer’s vehicle, police said. Officers from both Boise and Garden City pinned the suspects’ vehicle so they couldn’t flee and attempted to get the men to leave their vehicle but they refused, according to the release. Roughly 20 minutes later, the men exited the vehicle and were taken into custody.
Police said they located two handguns in the vehicle. Police charged the driver with four felonies: driving under the influence, eluding and two counts of aggravated assault. He was also charged with driving without privileges, misdemeanor resisting and obstructing and a citation for discharge of a firearm in city limits.
The other man was charged with a felony for possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, and he was cited for discharging a firearm, the release said. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting with the investigation. Police said both men will be placed on a federal detainer, meaning a federal agency like ICE might take over their custody.
