Former East Idaho girls basketball coach arrested on suspicion of statutory rape
A former East Idaho girls high school coach was arrested on suspicion of statutory rape.
Wade Schvaneveldt, who led the girls basketball team at Soda Springs High School for 20 seasons, was arrested on multiple counts of statutory rape Friday, according to a Facebook post from the Soda Springs Police Department.
The 52-year-old was booked into the Caribou County Jail on a $350,000 bond, records showed as of Tuesday morning. He is still in custody, according to police and online jail records.
The arrest was the result of a “joint investigation” between Soda Springs police and the Caribou County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation is ongoing.
Schvaneveldt is no longer a coach at Soda Springs, as the Soda Springs Joint School District decided not to renew his contract this summer, Caribou County Sheriff Adam Mabey told the Idaho Statesman by phone. The Cardinals won eight state trophies in the past eight years.
“I just know they made a decision to go a different direction,” Mabey said.
The school district did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
