25-year-old Boise man shot, injured by police pleads not guilty to aggravated assault
A 25-year-old man who was shot and injured by a Boise police officer in February has pleaded not guilty to the two felony charges against him.
Jonathan Manee, of Boise, was charged with aggravated assault on certain law enforcement personnel and an enhancement for the alleged use of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Manee’s two-day jury trial is expected to begin on Oct. 25, according to court records.
On Feb. 22, Manee was seen blocking the road on Fairview Avenue between North Liberty and North Hartman streets with a vehicle and attempting to flag down other drivers, according to witnesses, who said they were “concerned for his welfare,” the Idaho Statesman previously reported.
After a “brief interaction,” an officer who had arrived — identified as Cody Evans, a 15-year veteran in the Boise Police Department — shot and wounded the man, according to police. Evans was driving an unmarked police vehicle but was in full uniform.
Manee allegedly displayed or threatened to use a firearm before the officer fired his weapon, according to documents previously obtained by the Statesman. The Boise Police Department never confirmed Manee was carrying a gun but said he had a “deadly weapon,” according to a March news release.
Evans was placed on paid administrative leave per department policy in February, though it’s unclear if Evans is still on leave. Boise police spokesperson Haley Williams told the Statesman by email that the department doesn’t “provide ongoing updates on employee leave status.”
Manee, as of Monday, is in custody at the Ada County Jail on a $200,000 bond, according to online court records.
The incident is under investigation by the Critical Incident Task Force, which is standard practice, with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office as the lead agency. Williams said she hasn’t received any updates on the status of the investigation or whether the case has been sent to a prosecutor.
The incident with Manee was the first officer-involved shooting by Boise police this year. The department had five officer-involved shootings last year.
Manee’s public defender, David Stewart, declined to comment.
According to online court records, Manee’s next hearing is at 9 a.m. on Oct. 3. The Ada County Prosecutor’s Office also declined to comment citing pending litigation.
