California man sentenced to prison in connection with 2014 rape in Boise
A 58-year-old California man was sentenced to prison this week after he was convicted earlier this year of raping a woman in Boise nearly six years ago.
Reginald Burley will spend at least the next 30 years in prison before he will be eligible for parole, according to a news release from the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office. In January, a jury found Burley guilty of one count of rape and not guilty on a first-degree kidnapping charge.
In late 2014, Burley attacked a woman at her Boise home and raped her. The woman escaped after the attack and quickly reported the assault to police. Burley was soon after indicted by a grand jury on counts of rape and kidnapping, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Burley was arrested in January 2015 in California, where he faced a charge of kidnapping someone under the age of 14. After he pleaded guilty to attempted kidnapping of a victim under the age of 14 and was sentenced in that case, he was extradited to Idaho to face charges, according to the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office.
During his sentencing hearing Tuesday, District Judge Patrick J. Miller sentenced Burley to a term of up to life in prison, requiring that 30 years must be served before he is eligible for parole.
“You present an extreme danger not only to reoffend but to reoffend in a particularly aggravated and serious way,” Miller said during the sentencing. “I find the likelihood that you would ever be able to return to the community safely as very low.”
Miller also put in an order barring Burley from having contact with the woman until 2050.
“I appreciate the victim having the courage to come forward,” Ada County Prosecutor Jan M. Bennetts said in a news release. “Thank you to the Boise Police Department for their hard work on a case that took several years to bring to trial.”
As of Wednesday, Burley was still in the custody of the Ada County Jail.
