Idaho man sentenced to 50 years in Boise Bench shooting that left 19-year-old woman dead
A 20-year-old Meridian man could serve up to 50 years in prison for the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Briana Martinez and the nonfatal shootings of two other people last April.
Anthony Alcala pleaded guilty in December to voluntary manslaughter — a charge amended down from second-degree murder — two counts of aggravated battery, and one enhancement for the use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a crime.
He won’t be eligible for parole until he serves 20 years, 4th District Court Judge Samuel Hoagland ordered Friday.
Alcala also shot Natalie Martinez and Sonny Heidenreich, who survived their injuries. Briana and Natalie Martinez were sisters. Natalie was shot four times, according to previous reports.
Hoagland sentenced Alcala to 10 years on each of the aggravated battery charges and 30 years on the voluntary manslaughter charge, to run consecutively.
The shooting happened near the intersection of Palouse Street and South Owyhee Street. Alcala initially fled with two women before police arrived at the scene.
The women were charged in connection to the shooting for helping harbor Alcala until police arrested him.
Jessica Lee Perez, 19, was charged with a felony for harboring Alcala after the shooting. She was sentenced to five years in prison by Hoagland, but will be eligible for parole after serving two. She will serve a rider program and could be released on probation if she is compliant.
Taja Ra McMurtrey-Winn, 22, of Boise, was also charged with accessory to a felony for helping harbor Alcala. She was sentenced in October to five years of probation, with an underlying sentence of one to five years in prison, should she violate her probation.
“I’d like to express my condolences to all of the victims in this case and their families,” Ada County Prosecutor Jan M. Bennetts said in a statement. “I also want to thank the Boise Police Department for their hard work on this tragic case.”
