Idaho man flees officers after domestic violence attack, hits a patrol car, police say

Garden City Police arrested a man Sunday night after responding to a report of domestic violence that quickly turned into a police pursuit.

Police responded at 7:19 p.m. in the 400 block of East 46th Street and learned that suspect Charles Cortez, 40, of Garden City, had fled the scene in a vehicle. Officers quickly found Cortez and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. He refused to stop, and a short pursuit ensued, according to a Garden City Police Department news release — during which “Cortez intentionally struck one of the patrol cars.”

The release said Cortez was arrested “shortly thereafter when he intentionally struck a vehicle belonging to the domestic violence victim, which was parked in front of the residence.”

Police said Cortez appeared to be “highly intoxicated.”

No one was injured in the collisions, and Cortez was booked into Ada County Jail on suspicion of felony domestic battery, felony eluding, felony assault on an officer, misdemeanor driving under the influence and misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident.

Cortez was due in court on Monday afternoon.
