Details around the Thursday afternoon shooting at a Caldwell senior center were still unclear Friday morning, but police have described it as both an officer-involved shooting and a murder-suicide.
The shooting in Caldwell on Thursday afternoon left two people dead, including the suspect, and multiple people injured, while the motive remains unclear.
The incident began around 4:20 p.m. when authorities received a report of an active shooter at Portstewart Senior Community apartments, near the intersection of 10th Avenue and Ustick Road, according to KIVI-TV Channel 6. Upon arrival, Caldwell Police said there were multiple victims. It wasn’t immediately clear if the victims were residents of the apartments.
On Friday morning, Caldwell Police said they were investigating an apparent murder-suicide, and the Critical Incident Task Force would be handling the officer-involved aspect of the incident.
A police officer on scene sustained non-life-threatening injuries. It’s unclear if any police officers fired a weapon.
None of the people involved in the incident have been identified yet.
Idaho State Police said Friday morning that they are assisting in the investigation but the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office will be leading the critical incident investigation.
Joe Decker, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said Friday that “one Caldwell officer was injured in the incident, and was treated and released from a local hospital.”
Information about the other injured people’s medical status had not been released on Friday morning.
The Critical Incident Task Force responded to the scene of the shooting and, by 10:30 p.m., Caldwell Police said roads in the area had been reopened.
Portstewart is a senior living facility with one- and two-bedroom apartments, according to the property manager’s website, Tomlinson & Associates, Inc.
