Man shot, killed by Nampa PD was pointing crossbow at law enforcement, police say

Nampa Police reported they shot and killed an armed man late Saturday while responding to a call of a person threatening to harm himself.

Nampa Police said dispatch recieved two separate calls for a welfare check and responded to the 100 block of Davis Avenue. Once officers arrived in the area, they located a 58-year-old man, who was armed with a loaded crossbow, according to Nampa Police. They said the man, identified as Thomas H. Luedtke, pointed the weapon at police.

Police told Luedtke to drop the weapon, and he refused, according to a press release.

Three Nampa officers fired their weapons at Luedtke. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three officers had 14 years, 4 years and 10 months of service with the Nampa Police Department. Each officer has prior law enforcement experience. The officers were not named by the Nampa Police.

In a press release, Nampa Police said the department has responded to prior incidents involving Luedtke and that he has been placed on previous mental health holds by the department.

No officers were injured. The Canyon County Critical Incident Task Force was called out to investigate the incident. Caldwell Police is leading the investigation.

The incident adds to the number of people killed in officer-involved shootings in Idaho this year, setting 2018 at a record high in the first six months.
