The Ada County Coroner’s Office this week identified a 67-year-old man who died while cycling last fall as Ross Masson.

Masson died after a 26-year-old driving southbound on Black Cat Road on Sept. 13 in Kuna struck him while he was riding his bike near the white line on the shoulder of the road.

The coroner’s office initially denied the Idaho Statesman’s March records request for the man’s name and cause of death, citing an active investigation. The coroner’s office frequently identifies people who die in public within days of the incident.

On Tuesday, the coroner released the information after an attorney for the Statesman sent a letter questioning the denial. However, the coroner’s office said it decided to release the man’s name because the office had concluded its investigation.

Masson’s cause of death was listed as traumatic blunt force injuries and manner of death as an accident.

Ada County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lauren Montague said law enforcement is in the final phase of the investigation and “should be routing it (to) the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office next week.”
